About Worcester & Malvern Local Group

Would you like to do something for birds? If you would, please join us.

Would you like to watch and learn about birds as part of an enthusiastic group of like-minded people? If so, please join us.

We are an active, friendly group of birdwatchers from beginners to experts. We have a packed programme of conservation projects to get involved in along with meetings, birding walks, day trips, and birding holidays.

Conservation projects

We run several conservation projects across Worcestershire and encourage members to join in.

  1. Hallow Fields :- We have teamed up with the Malvern Hills District Council to create a nature reserve from 45 acres of intensively farmed flood plain. We are planting an orchard, species rich grassland and hedges, and/or you could get involved with the surveys conducted on site.
  2. University of Worcester:- We have converted 7 acres of unused playing fields into a bird seed crop and rewilded area.
  3. Sand Martins:- In partnership with the Canal and River Trust and the Worcester Environmental Group we have put 3 artificial sand martin boxes on the banks of the River Severn, members can help ring the nestlings.
  4. Swifts and Owls:- We put up Swift boxes and Barn Owl boxes across the county.
  5. Schools:- We are linked to 4 primary schools and one secondary school with active participation for members showing nature to children.
  6. Bird surveys and working parties:- We help Wildgoose Care Farm and The Heart Of England Forest with bird surveys and land management working parties.
  7. We help feed one of the last remaining flocks of Corn Buntings in Worcestershire.

All members are welcome to get involved in our conservation projects and help Worcestershire’s birds.

Indoor meetings

Our indoor evening meetings take place once a month (September–May) at Powick Parish Hall or, in mid-winter, via Zoom. The meetings cover a wide range of bird related topics, local and international. We update everyone on our projects, and provide information on how you can get involved. We make sure anyone attending for the first time has the opportunity to meet club members and learn about what we do.

Birding walks

We have monthly birding walks led by a group member, they usually take a morning, and again new members are always made welcome.

Trips to reserves

Our monthly day trips, by coach or minibus, to premier bird reserves within 2-3 hours of Worcester, give members great opportunities to see a wide range of species not usually found in our area. New members are given the opportunity to join the trip leaders or other club members for the day.

Birding holidays
