Staines Moor (8 September)
Following a night of thunder, lightning and heavy rain, an intrepid band from the group set forth onto Staines Moor. A two-hour gap of dry weather was promised, but it was overcast and the birds were reluctant to show themselves amongst the dense foliage. Some were identified by call; a pair of blackcaps showed very well and a garden warbler. As we reached the Moor itself, the rain started, one hour early! It made for difficult viewing. A little egret flew by, a buzzard sat forlornly in a tree and a few mallard flew over. The highlight was the appearance of both Wheatear and Whinchat. However, discretion then played the better part of valour and we trudged back to our cars, thoroughly wet. The bushes and trees, though, are full of fruit and a visit on a dry, warmish day in the near future is highly recommended.
