Events
Wigan RSPB Local Group welcomes new members and non-members at all events.
Each month from September to March there is an Indoor Meeting at which a nationally or regionally recognised speaker presents an illustrated talk on a topic of interest to those enthusiastic about wildlife issues. The talks are entertaining and informative and the quality of the photography is stunning.
Tea, coffee and soft drinks are available at the interval and this presents new members and visitors with an excellent opportunity to meet existing members of the Group and to find out more about outdoor activities. The indoor meeting generally takes place on the second Tuesday of the month. In December, with Christmas falling in the third week, we move the meeting to the first Tuesday of December.
About 30 outdoor trips to bird sites are organised each year. Travel is by car with petrol costs shared where lifts are given. Most sites have free admission but some are dependent on membership and non-members may have to pay. Events are very seldom cancelled but it is always necessary for new members or non-members to phone the leader in advance to check details – a phone number is given for every outdoor event. The Wednesday walk normally follows the Tuesday indoor meeting. The destination is normally decided at that meeting after a discussion of where might be of most interest. The Saturday long walk destinations will be published for the year and are often dependent on the times of high tide, to get the best chance of good views of coastal birds. The Saturday short walk will normally be on the Saturday following the Wednesday walk unless this clashes with the long walk. The calendar of walks and destinations is generally published in time for the September walks when the indoor meetings recommence.

We will not necessarily be searching for rare birds just enjoying the regular ones that are found at the venue. The walk will cover a short distance on reasonably level ground and should suit those who do not want to spend the whole day birdwatching. Families with children will be most welcome but children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
As with all Wigan Local Group events we ask you not to bring dogs because even the best behaved can disturb wildlife.
