Trip Report: Broadwater Warren RSPB Reserve

Date: Thursday 14th December 2023

Weather: Dry, cloudy, mild

Highlights: Dartford Warbler and the goats!

We were fortunate that Alan Loweth, one of the volunteers who manages the reserve, kindly offered to show us round, so we got to some places that usual visitors don’t see. He showed us the herd of goats that help to control the growth of scrub and saplings. They are of traditional breeds, very attractive with their impressive horns.

On the bird front, it was pretty quiet. However we did have clear views of Dartford Warbler, which we found by looking near where Stonechat were showing. Apparently the Dartfords often hang around with them.

Here’s the list, just 12 species but with some interesting birds amongst it:

Carrion Crow
Red Kite

Blackbird (h)
Dartford Warbler
Blue Tit
