August 2026 walk at Porteynon Bay

It was a bright and warm morning when nineteen participants (including four new walkers) met up at the car park at a Porteynon, busy with many tourists. The tide was full in as the group made its way along a footpath to the Salt House where we were able to see Pied Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Linnet, Rock Pipit, Ringed Plover and Wheatear near to the shoreline and Herring gull, Oystercatcher, Black Backed Gull and Sandwich Tern
on the rocks of a small island.

Occasional birds (e.g. Swallow, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Sparrow and Starling) appeared over the dunes and coastal shrubbery. The group headed up the hill towards Port Eynon Point catching good views of a whitethroat and a Magpie. At the triangulation point (see photo) of the headland the group had a rest looking westwards over rocks and sea and were rewarded with views of Little Egret, Cormorant, juvenile Black Backed Gull and Oystercatcher. Heading along the coastal path to Overton Mere Stonechat and Common Blue butterfly were seen on the gorse and bracken. The Group then headed up the hill towards Porteynon and returned down a wooded path to the Car Park.

Species seen were Blackbird, Black Backed Gull, Carrion Crow, Cormorant, Dunlin, Dunnock, Grey Heron, Herring Gull, House Sparrow, Jackdaw, Linnet, Little Egret, Magpie, Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Robin, Rock Pipit, Sandwich Tern, Starling, Stonechat, Swallow, Wheatear and Wood Pigeon making 23 species in all.
