The River Loughor which flows down from Ammanford and Pontardulais, meets the Burry Inlet at Loughor. The Loughor Estuary is the area around the rail and road bridges up to the M4 bridge. The high tidal range exposes a large area of sandbanks which are ideal for ducks, waders and other water birds. Good views can be obtained from the Coastal Path on the east side of the Estuary. This starts at the road bridge, passes the Loughor Boating Club and follows the edge of the Estuary for one mile to the Riverside park/car park area.
There are expansive and impressive views across the Loughor Estuary. Abundant birdlife can be seen, sometimes rare, especially during winter migration season. Regular sightings in the Estuary and just beyond the rail bridge include mallard, bar tailed godwit, redshank, lesser black backed gull, black backed gull, greater black headed gull, herring gull, shelduck, white egret, heron, mute swan, curlew, oystercatcher. jackdaw and carrion crow. Occasionally there are greenshank, black-tailed godwit, common sandpiper, pintail, knot, dunlin and sanderling.
