The beach at Blackpill is part of an SSSI which stretches approximately two miles from Blackpill to Mumbles Pier. It is covered and uncovered each day by a high tidal range of up to 10m. Over 70 species are regularly seen from the Centre and the beach at Blackpill is also an important feeding station for migratory waders such as Sanderling, Ringed Plovers and Oystercatchers. These birds stop over to refuel on their global journeys, from Africa to Greenland, and the Russian Steppes, and back again. At Mumbles Pier there is a colony of Kittiwakes each summer that nest on the Old Lifeboat Station. Turnstones are often seen on the Station ramp when the tide is in.
