Pennington Flash is one of the best areas for watching birds in Greater Manchester. The County Recorder found 66 species there in a single day in early January 2018, but it is not unusual to collect over 40 in a morning. There are regular Bullfinches and Willow Tits on the feeders, a good chance of a Water Rail or a Kingfisher, and the gull roost often includes Iceland Gull, Yellow-Legged Gull and Mediterranean Gull in winter. All the commoner species of wildfowl can be seen on the flash itself in the course of the year, and many waders regularly pass through, including Green Sandpiper.
