Stodmarsh NNR and RSPB Blean Woods

Trip report to Stodmarsh NNR and RSPB Blean Woods on Sunday 18th of June.

There were 8 members who joined the Hitchin and Letchworth Group for a trip to these 2 reserves in Kent.

At Stodmarsh NNR the weather was dry and warm and we had good views of Cettis Warblers, Reed Warblers, Reed Buntings, Sedge Warblers, Chiffchaffs, and Blackcaps amongst the reeds and small bushes/trees.

When looking up there were Common Terns, Marsh Harriers, Buzzards, Kestrels, 2 Hobbies, together with the usual Gulls flying above the reserve.

At RSPB Blean Woods the rain started as we reached a small clearing, but we still managed to get close to 4 Heath Fritillary Butterflies.

The highlights for most was a very good and close view of a Cettis Warbler, seeing 4 Bearded Tits fly closely to us, a Turtle Dove at first heard calling and then seen well, and a Bittern seen from the viewpoint  flying above the reeds.

A good day with 54 species seen, and a well earned ice cream enjoyed.
