Rutland Water

Trip report for visit to Rutland Water on 26th of March.

Following several withdrawals due to health and the weather forecast, six of us met up at Rutland Water. The weather people got it wrong as the rain stopped precisely at 10.AM as promised.

During the day we managed fifteen species of wildfowl including Scaup (a lifer for some) and displaying Goldeneye. We also saw both common grebe species. The raptor highlight was three Ospreys only in from Africa ten days earlier. Only seven wader species were seen. Two people saw a pair of Common Terns. A Great Spotted Woodpecker was heard drumming and later seen.

The passerine stars were good numbers of Sand Martins visiting their wall. Song Thrushes and Chiffchaffs were in good voice and were eventually seen as was a Cetti’s Warbler. A pair of Bullfinches also proved popular.

An enjoyable day with 65 species seen.
