Rainham Marshes

Trip report for visit to Rainham Marshes on 22nd Of January.

On a bright cold (-1) morning, seven members arrived in the Rainham car park. The bird count was lower than expected mainly because all the scrapes were frozen but the closure of the Northern boardwalk didn’t help. Nevertheless we managed in excess of 40 species.

The highlights were 50+ Avocets with Redshanks Shelducks and about twenty Pintails in Aveley Bay plus flocks of Wigeon and Teal all on the unfrozen River Thames. Within the reserve the star birds were Marsh Harriers and a flock of thirteen Curlews plus five Snipe. We also saw both Meadow and Rock Pipits, and Fieldfares and Redwings.

We were also entertained all day by the ever active Lapwing flocks.
