This reserve was created from the floodplain of the adjoining River Alt and is managed by Lancashire and Merseyside Wildlife Trust.

There are no hides but many screens from which the birdlife can be observed as well as many paths around the reserve.

Summer brings migrant warblers as well as resident species and in the winter short-eared owls descend from their summer upland habitats

There is a car park accessed by a track off the Ince Blundell to Sefton Road.
