Wednesday 21st February – Fishers Green

6 members turned up to shelter from the rain in the Bittern Hide prior to our Wednesday Walk at Fishers Green. We have been a little unlucky with wet weather for the February outdoor programme, resulting in the cancellation of the Local Walk on the 8th; a very wet coach outing to Cley on Sunday and now our Wednesday Walk. We therefore spent some time in the Bittern Hide and also the Discovery Centre when it opened at 10:00.

The feeders outside the Centre are always busy, primarily with Blue and Great Tits but we also saw Ring-necked Parakeets, Chaffinches and Dunnocks. Out on the lake the rafts – originally built for breeding Common Terns – were being commandeered by Black-headed Gulls, a number sporting their chocolate brown heads. On the Old River Lee a drake Goosander was found and several Great Crested Grebes were already in breeding plumage, with at least two pairs nest building.

Given the conditions the original plan was to simply follow the route around Seventy Acres Lake but with everyone‘s waterproofs living up to their manufacturer’s claims, we instead decided to extend the walk and follow the flood relief channel down to Hall Marsh Scrape. The four lagoons were reprofiled in the autumn making them much more attractive to waterbirds and the cutting back of the hedge along the northern path now allows better viewing of the site. There were several species on the scrape but the highlights were a Yellow-legged Gull and a pair of Shelduck.

Our return leg took us back along the Lee Navigation towpath spotting, ‘Woody’, the Silver Wood Duck hanging out at its usual spot. We briefly popped into the WDC to check if anything else had been reported and it was then time to call it a day and make our way back to our cars.
