Sunday 26th November 2023 RSPB Marshside & Hesketh Outmarsh

Our November field trip took us to two RSPB reserves which form part of the Ribble estuary N.N.R just north of Southport. It turned out a lot drier than forecast but still a very cold windy day enjoyed by 9 members.

A good selection of wildfowl— pintail, wigeon, shelduck, shoveler, pink-footed geese and whooper swans etc.

Waders— black-tailed godwit, dunlin, redshank, snipe, curlew and oystercatcher.

Raptors— peregrine which harassed the massed duck and wader flocks, a marsh harrier hunting out on the saltmarsh and a brief view of a ring-tailed hen harrier flying through.

Great white egret, little egret, grey heron along with skylark, meadow pipit, linnet were also seen; about 50 species all told.

The last ones to leave the carpark at Hesketh had the highlight of the day, a hunting barn owl. Wow!
