Heavy rain showers had been forecast for the afternoon; in fact they arrived as we were about to set off. Despite this and the blustery wind, we had a good start. Around the edge of the picture postcard little harbour scurried a small group of Turnstone doing exactly what it says in the field guide. Moving to the limited viewpoint over the Avon Water\u2019s marsh and reedbed we saw Kingfisher, Greenshank, Black Tailed Godwit, Lapwing, Avocet, Little Grebe and Little Egret. We then moved on to the rather exposed embankment, overlooking the estuary and saltmarsh recording an impressive number of species including Dunlin, Grey Plover, more Black-tailed Godwit, Ringed Plover, Redshank, Oystercatcher, Greenshank, Snipe, Curlew, Common Sandpiper, Little Stint and a Semipalmated Sandpiper &#8211; an abundant American wader along with its cousins Western Sandpiper and Least Sandpiper ( Little Stint ) known to American birders as &#8221; peeps. &#8221; This particular &#8221; peep &#8221; was hopelessly lost and should have been in South America!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as impressive, our list of raptors included Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawk, Merlin, Peregrine,\u00a0Kestrel and the amazing sight of a White-tailed Eagle being mobbed by Ravens &#8211; tiny by comparison. Small birds were also in abundance. Flocks of Linnets and Meadow Pipits, a Wheatear, Dartford Warbler, Cettis Warbler, Yellow Wagtail, Rock Pipit, Stonechat and many migrating Swallows. On the estuary several Eider bobbed up and down and a number of Great Black-backed Gulls sat lazily on a sand bar. By this time the rain had abated and it was time for lunch taken on the sheltered side of the embankment overlooking the marsh where a flock of waders ran around energetically.
