The group of 23 arrived at Arne RSPB, one of the organisations flagship reserves, though cool and overcast there was, thankfully, no sign of rain and the day began to brighten.

Following the formalities we made our way along the trail to the Purbeck viewpoint where we were greeted by a large flock of small birds – mainly Blue, Great, Coal and Long-tailed Tits, with Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Firecrest, Chiffchaff, and a rather sickly-looking Chaffinch. From the viewpoint across the saltmarsh, we spotted Curlew, Redshank and Little Egret. We then moved slowly along the path to the small sandy beach where we saw Sandwich Terns, Whimbrel, Greenshank, Grey Plover and Oystercatcher.

After lunch we walked along to the Wetland Trail, through the heathland some of us seeing Dartford Warbler and Stonechat. At the Reedbed Hide we had 9 Little Grebe, a Kingfisher and about 300 Curlew but unfortunately very little else. On our slow meander back to the reserve centre we were surprised by a large number of migrating Spotted Flycatchers giving excellent views of this enigmatic little bird. Also present were families of Stonechat, many Meadow Pipits, Raven and several Tit flocks. It had been quite a long walk and we were ready for tea, coffee and cake at the centre before making our way to the hotel in Poole.

Saturday: Brownsea Island and Osprey Birding Cruise

Following superb views of the pair of Peregrines roosting on the balcony of a building next to our hotel, we made our way to the quayside for our much-anticipated visit to Brownsea Island on a warm and sunny day with a flat calm on the vast Poole Harbour. It was decided to split into 2 groups with one group doing the Osprey Tour that afternoon, and the second group doing the tour on Sunday morning. The lagoon on Brownsea held an interesting collection of waders including Greenshank, Knot, Dunlin, Little Ringed Plover, Avocet, Spoonbill, a very confiding Whinchat and Black Tailed Godwit. In the woodland area the group had Nuthatch, Goldcrest, Chiffchaff, and the delightful Red Squirrels and on the shoreline Turnstone, Sandwich Tern and Common Sandpiper.

Half of the group then headed back to Poole for the very popular Birds of Poole Harbour Osprey Cruise up to the Wareham channel. This superb trip gave unforgettable views of White-tailed Eagle, fishing Ospreys, Marsh Harriers, Buzzard, Shag, Mediterranean Gull, Glossy Ibis, Great Egret and Kestrel. A truly spectacular afternoon.

Sunday: Lytchett Bay RSPB and Rock Lea Viewpoint

Following checkout from the hotel, half of the group did the Osprey tour and the rest of the party who had done the Saturday tour drove to Lytchett Bay RSPB and Rock Lea viewpoint. Walking towards the scrape there were Swallows, Greenfinch, House Sparrows and Nuthatch. At the scrape the waders were very close, so we approached quietly. Here there were Greenshank, Black Tailed Godwit, Teal and two very sleepy Spotted Redshank. There were also views of Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, and an Osprey carrying a fish around seemingly undecided whether to eat it or save it for later.

Following our time at the scrape we walked to the Rock Lea viewpoint by which time the tide had turned and the waders began to come down the channel from the Lytchett Bay scrape.

There was just time for an afternoon visit to Blashford Lakes on the way home. Here the walk through the woodland yielded Nuthatch, Treecreeper, a possible Firecrest and a close encounter with a Buzzard. From the lakeside hides we saw many Lapwing, Common Sandpiper, Blackcap, Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Great Egret and a solitary Snipe. On the path between the hides a huge Goat Moth caterpillar was seen, around 10cm long and about a centimetre wide, dark purple in colour with orange edges a remarkable looking creature and quite rare. A few lucky members of the group saw three Otters from one of the hides. An amazing sight and a fitting finale to what had been a wonderful weekend

Many thanks are due to Rebecca and Sandra for their hard work in the organisation of the trip ensuring it all went smoothly and our selfless drivers making it all possible.

by Roy Pattison

Sunday: Birds of Poole Harbour Boat Trip

A second group went out on the boat trip on Sunday. Expectations were high as there had been some great sightings of White-tailed Eagle, Osprey and Glossy Ibis not only the day before, when half our group went out, but over the past week. The sailing started well in calm sunny conditions with good views of a Mediterranean Gull, Shag and Sandwich Terns on the buoys in the harbour then as we went upstream, we got our first views of Osprey and also a juvenile White-tailed Eagle on the eastern shoreline. We watched as the juvenile eagle flew around just above the treeline, sending up flocks of panicking birds.

As we went on there were more Osprey sightings and a Peregrine hunted on the shoreline. More Osprey appeared the more we looked. As if that wasn’t enough to keep us spinning around in all directions trying to keep up, we then saw a male adult White-tailed Eagle dive and grab a sizeable fish, which it took to a nearby beach and started to eat, shortly to be joined by the female with whom he shared the spoils. A Marsh Harrier then approached from the air and landed close to the eagle pair, presumably hoping to grab a bit of fish, but he flew off empty handed after a couple of minutes. We noticed how the harrier was dwarfed in size by the eagles and we were amazed at its audacity. All the while, Ospreys were still flying around and once the eagle pair eventually took off, we didn’t know where to look.

With all this raptor action going on, we unfortunately ran out of time to proceed further along the channel and try and see the Glossy Ibis, but it was certainly a bumper day in terms of raptor sightings, and we were far from disappointed. The Birds of Poole Harbour crew said this had been one of the best days of the year for seeing Osprey (there were at least 10). We also had great views of Sandwich Tern diving for fish very close to the boat on our way back so that was a nice way to round off an awe-inspiring morning.
