Luckily the 2 torrential downpours of the morning occurred when we’d just reached double sided bus shelter type hides and after lunch the weather cleared. Lakenheath gave first views of many of the birds typical of the East Anglian Broads, Fens and Marshes that we would encounter over the weekend; Marsh Harriers, Reed Warblers and Cuckoos among them. But here we had our best views of Bittern! Birds flew right over our heads, including around their nest site in front of Mere hide. On our afternoon walk, following the raised path along the River Little Ouse, we watched Hobbies chasing dragonflies and Common Terns fishing. The Washland scrape added more bird variety with Avocet, Redshank and Black-tailed Godwit.

With the day still young we drove on towards Acle, stopping at Strumpshaw Fen 6 miles from our hotel. The visitor centre was closing but from the viewing screen we had wonderful views of a couple of Kingfishers and a fleeting Swallowtail butterfly. However, my highlight and perhaps my highlight of the whole trip, was a female Water Vole on what Ian informed us was its ‘grazing lawn’. We spent at least 10 minutes watching it calmly nibbling grass, knowing that it had instant access to the neighbouring pond, via a hole, should we come too close!

By now everyone was ready for dinner and after checking into Acle Travelodge we headed to the Acle Bridge pub where we were joined by Sally-Ann and Christo, completing our group of 22.

by Rebecca Dunne

Saturday 7th June After a good night’s sleep in the Acle Travelodge and a hearty breakfast in Starbucks we assembled at Hickling Broad, where Rebecca had arranged a morning trip, in two 12 seater flat-bottomed boats, with local experts, around the Broad. Our rain gear was really tested here as the weather was rather wet. However, it didn’t dampen our spirits as there was so much to learn and see on the Broad. These lakes were formed by peat digging for over 2,000 years. The locals have relied on peat as a heat source since ancient times and we now benefit from their efforts with delightful lakes full of wildlife. We had a debate as to whether the peat was dug out from underwater or in the dry. More research is needed!

We were in amongst the reedbeds so got very close to Cettis, Reed Warblers and Reed Buntings as well as all the usual ducks and waterbirds. We had a delightful moment when we saw a Bittern on a feeding flight, heard a Water Rail squealing, and then got the distinctive pings of Bearded Tits (Boat crew one saw both of these). There were still male Bitterns about, for we heard them booming from deep in the reed beds.

We climbed 75 steps up a watchtower to get brilliant views over the Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve and some distant Cattle Egrets. A stop at a hide only accessible by boat was another highlight.

After the boat trip we wandered back to the centre to have our sandwiches. On the way, “Boat crew one”, got an amazing sight of 7 Bearded Tits in a small dead tree just above the reeds. We were so pleased with ourselves and couldn’t wait to tell “Boat crew two”. However, they trumped us completely by having seen not one, but two Otters on the shore of the Broad.

A short walk took us to a bramble lined path which was a favoured spot for butterflies, and we were delighted with really close encounters with Swallowtail butterflies when they were briefly warmed by sunshine. There were also Drinker Moth Caterpillars. Quite beautiful.

Next, we wandered along Brendan’s Marsh where there were large numbers of waterbirds including some Cranes and Spoonbills. It was difficult for small people to see over the vegetation so two viewing platforms were rather welcome. Especially when someone spotted a breeding plumaged Ruff and a Pectoral Sandpiper on scrape. After a bit of shoving and pushing with local birders we all managed to see this rare visitor from North America. In a final walk out onto the Broad we heard Grasshopper Warblers.

We had another excellent supper in the welcoming Acle Bridge pub.

Sunday 8th June.

After an hour’s drive south, we gathered at a field where the RSPB are encouraging Stone Curlews to get established. Much searching with bins and scopes didn’t produce anything in a strong wind so we went on to the main Minsmere reserve. At the end of the day, 7 stalwarts returned, (3 more on Monday) and with a bit of patience had excellent views of three or four adults and a chick. Very satisfying!

Minsmere is one of the star attractions of the RSPB and it lived up to its reputation today. First, we looked in on the Sand Martin bank (a natural sandy cliff) and were delighted with good views of tiny chicks looking out of the burrows to see their next meal arriving. Next, we walked round the north side of the Scrape, popping into each hide in turn. We were a big group so we must have seen everything there was to see. Plenty of gulls, ducks, waders and raptors. The highlight was a solitary Roseate Tern on a sand by the Public Viewpoint and a nearby Little Tern. Most of the Roseates are seen on Croquet Island in Northumberland so it was a great “Spot”. The local RSPB guides were very helpful. There was also one Knot in winter plumage which was a bit strange. When we were nearly back at the Visitor’s centre there was a big crowd staring up into the oak trees. They had found a Tawny Owl, fast asleep, high in a tree. Later it turned around and all we saw was its back.

In the afternoon we visited the Bittern and Island Mere hides but there were no rarities there. A good hike up Whin Hill took us back through the oak woods. It gave us lovely views over the whole reserve.

We stayed in the Lowestoft Premier Inn and ate in the Beefeater.

Monday 9th June.

Our last Reserve was the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Carlton Marshes. This is a huge expanse of reedbeds with plenty of warblers and other birds. We were amazed to find the Sedge Warblers so friendly. Normally they hide down in the reeds but here we got really close sightings because they appeared to be fearless. We walked around the entire Share Marsh and up to the river Waveney. There was a Cuckoo singing, and it didn’t take us long to spot it high in trees across the river. He sang there all day. Sandra spotted a high flying Crane and we delighted to find a Grasshopper Warbler perched on a fence! The warden’s inspection of the Barn Owl chicks in their box meant that we had great views of a flying adult!

The highlight at this reserve was being split into two groups, each with a Butterfly/Dragonfly expert. We saw all sorts and learnt a lot of Dragonfly facts. See list below. We were amazed to see so many Tortoiseshell butterflies because elsewhere they have not been doing well. At one spot we counted 57 on purple thistle flowers in an area only three metres across. We had walked around the Marsh twice now, so it was time for a cup of tea before heading back to London.
