A very pleasant trip to Rainham Marshes for 10 members. The weather started misty but cleared to sunshine and warmth. Our combined total of 72 species attests to a good day, especially when you realise that we didn\u2019t have expected birds like Blackbird or Chaffinch. We started our visit with a walk along the raised Thames path scanning the river and the reserve. Pinging Bearded Tits were heard almost immediately in the riverside reedbeds then to our surprise 2 flew high for about 100m. At the same time we had a Great White Egret on Purfleet Scrape and a Cetti\u2019s Warbler showed itself in a small bush. Next Sandra spotted the 2 Common Scoter that had been reported earlier. They were on the opposite side of the river and immediately took off and became black dots as they disappeared down steam, high over the warehouses and QEII bridge. A Rock Pipit was spotted on foreshore seaweed, but a large black dog disturbed it. We glimpsed a couple more flying off ahead of us but were they Rock Pipits or the reported Water Pipits?! Wigeon dabbled about all along the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a brisk walk up to Aveley Bay we arrived just in time to catch 60 Avocets, 3 Curlew, a Black-tailed Godwit and a Grey Heron before the rising tide pushed them off. The Avocets flew to the opposite bank of the Thames until high tide moved them onto Purfleet Scrape. Later we watched them fly back out onto the Thames mud as the tide went out. We saw all their moves including being flushed from the scrape as a Peregrine bombed in. We hadn\u2019t seen the cause of the flush but soon saw a bedraggled, wet, Peregrine sitting on a pylon. At the end of our walk the Peregrine had another try at catching something on the scrape but missed again. It was interesting to note that the birds did not flush for Buzzards or even Marsh Harriers but were thrown into panic by the Peregrine.<\/p>\n\n\n

Anyway, rewinding to the riverside path, we walked past Aveley Bay up to the landfill mound to scout the fences for small birds. Plenty were found including lots of Meadow Pipits, Stonechat, Linnet, Reed Bunting and Skylark, some of whom were climbing into the sky to sing their full songs, rather unseasonally. Roy and Sandra were lucky enough to spot a Merlin dive in and attempt to grab a small bird. A Raven was also seen disappearing over the brow of the hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Returning to the visitor centre rather later than we\u2019d planned after all the interest along the river path, we decided to walk anticlockwise around the reserve for a change and have lunch in Ken Barrett hide. Looking out over the marsh on route we found a Buzzard and a Marsh Harrier. A Blackcap, a Sparrowhawk and Ivy Bees were seen in the Woodland area then a Water Rail squealed near the Barn Owl box. This was disappointingly empty! The aforementioned damp Peregrine sat high on a pylon but it was buzzed by a Kestrel which then flew to its partner on a neighbouring pylon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The view from the KB hide has been improved with the addition of new islands so we had things to look at during lunch. Pochard, Little Grebe, Mute Swan and Tufted Duck were added in this deeper water along with more views of Marsh Harrier. On the next large pool we found half a dozen elegant female Pintail and some Shelduck. Butts Hide gave us views over Butts scrape which was very quiet. A Snipe was seen, a Kingfisher shot past and we had more views of the 2 Marsh Harriers. However, Target Pool, visible from the opposite side of the hide, held an interesting group of birds: assorted ducks including a handsome male Pintail plus a juvenile Ruff and a Dunlin. These were just visible through the encroaching reed bed and consequently provided an ID challenge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last leg of our circuit took us past the Dragonfly Pool where you sometimes get Bearded Tits and the Kingfisher hide but nothing showed. Our final stop was Purfleet Hide to view Purfleet scrape from a different angle. One Snipe was spotted out in the open, next to a Gadwall, on the edge of a reedy island but careful examination revealed another 7 hidden in the foliage!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all, it was a successful day plus a few more group members were introduced to Rainham Marshes for the first time. It\u2019s a brilliant place, sitting on the urban fringe of London and the last stretch of ancient riverside marshland inside the M25. Our group travelled home happy, half on the train and half in car shares. Roy found a Brambling as he headed for the station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
