A Song Thrush sat in the same bush and House Sparrows hopped through the brambles. We scanned the South Brooks from here getting our first views of the nesting Avocets and Canada Goose families. Once gathered we headed off down the Zig-zag path to the beautiful sound of more Nightingales. We heard at least 7 of the reported 11 males during the day. Bird song was one of the highlights of the day partly because the reserve was so quiet and peaceful. Although we had good weather the forecast had been for rain so many visitors would have been put off. Greenfinch, Chiffchaff, Linnet, Goldfinch, Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Robin, Blackbird and Song Thrush, amongst others, added to the soundscape. We used our Merlin Apps to confirm what we were hearing but try as we might we couldn’t quite see the Garden Warbler which we thought was singing just out of sight below the hedge line…until it shot down from the thin tree it was actually singing in.

Fattengates itself was unusually quiet. Even after we’d put down some bird seed, we only succeeded in attracting a Crow although, excitingly, through the conifers a White Stork was glimpsed flying low (it’s not too far from Knepp to Pulborough). Just round the corner white Greater Stitchwort embroidered the verges and a pond was carpeted with white Water-crowfoot. Out first hide was West Mead which at first glance seemed quiet but patient looking found 5 tiny (and very cute) Lapwing chicks in two family groups with anxious parents keeping an eye on them, 3 pairs of nesting Avocets on adjacent tiny islands, Redshank, Canada Goose goslings, many Swift high up, 3+ Hobbies, another quick view of a White Stork disappearing behind distant trees, a couple of Red Kites and 5 Buzzards taking advantage of the thermals but being mobbed by corvids. Some of them were Rooks and returned to their rookery on the far side of the river when they thought they’d succeeded in chasing off a Buzzard. The next hide, and our lunch stop, was Winpenny. On route we saw the Rooks and Jackdaw that can be almost guaranteed in a field along here and a couple of Linnets. We also met Ruth and Jamie who now live in Pulborough but used to be members of the group. Ruth provided wonderful cakes for the afternoon meetings. In the bushes outside this hide a Reed Warbler’s rhythmic song was heard, and the bird was glimpsed, and this was joined by another Nightingale. A lucky few saw an Adder basking in dead grass but the vibrations from all our feet soon chased it back into the undergrowth. The best things seen across South Brooks from Winpenny were 3 Greenshank, a pair of elusive Ringed Plover and 2 very well-hidden Dunlin, eventually identified with a glimpse of their obvious black tummies…once they came out of the grass briefly. All this Plover and Dunlin action happened on one little island around a Black-headed Gull busy tinkering with its nest. We were still keeping an eye out for White-tailed Eagles but no luck although we did have more Buzzards, Red Kites and Hobbies. Kestrels were also seen during the day.

As we left Winpenny and headed up Adder Alley it started to drizzle but soon stopped and we eventually had sunshine. The North Brooks were quieter than the South Brooks but we did have excellent views of two pairs of streaky Sedge Warblers busy in the streamside undergrowth right in front of the windows of Nettley’s hide. Unfortunately, we reached Hanger view just after a Cuckoo had departed but did see a large herd of black Fallow deer, descendants of escapees from the Parham House estate. In the woods above Jupp’s View Great Tits were using a nest box and we were watching these and Blackcaps when a Nuthatch appeared on a trunk and then another close by on a fallen log…much excitement at such good views! As is always the case at Pulborough you think you have plenty of time but then realise that if you want a cup of tea before the centre (and toilets) close at 4pm you need to hurry back. We did stop at Fattengates to put down more seed and this time attracted Blue Tits and Great Tits and heard Chaffinch. The terrace behind the café looking out over South Brooks and the Downs is a lovely place to end the day. We added Mistle Thrush and the Nightingale was still serenading us although it didn’t pose for photos this time!
I find it hard to visit Pulborough without popping in at the nearby Rackham RSPB Viewpoint over Amberley Wild Brooks. Sandra, as driver, was easily persuaded to make the detour rather than heading straight home and Jerry had no choice as he was a passenger! It was lucky he was with us because he spotted “A bird on a post” and exclaimed “What’s that?” as a raptor like bird flew past at eye level. These were a White-tailed Eagle and a Cuckoo! We’d already heard Cuckoos calling as we stood up there. For those of you who had to go home I’m sorry to say that we had good views of the eagle on the post, flying around, on the ground and perching in its favourite tree. This juvenile’s developing white tail is just becoming visible. There were also good eye level views of Swifts with a couple more Hobbies amongst them.

63 species seen: Avocet, Black-headed Gull, Blackbird, Blackcap, Blue Tit, Buzzard, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Cetti’s Warbler, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Coot, Dunlin, Dunnock, Egyptian Goose, Feral Pigeon, Gadwall, Garden Warbler, Goldfinch, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Greenshank, Grey Heron, Greylag Goose, Herring Goose, Hobby, House Sparrow, Jackdaw, Jay, Kestrel, Lapwing, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Linnet, Little Egret, Long-tailed Tit, Magpie, Mallard, Mistle Thrush, Moorhen, Mute Swan, Nightingale, Nuthatch, Pheasant, Pied Wagtail, Red Kite, Redshank, Reed Warbler, Ringed Plover, Robin, Rook, Sedge Warbler, Shelduck, Shoveler, Skylark, Song Thrush, Starling, Swallow, Swift, Tufted Duck, White Stork, Whitethroat, Woodpigeon, Wren (plus Cuckoo and White-tailed Eagle from Rackham Viewpoint)

by Rebecca Dunne

11 of us met on the cafe terrace and were greeted by the sound and sight of a Nightingale perched up in a Hawthorn clump.
