On a pleasantly warm October morning eight members of the local group joined forces with a group led by Sam Levy, who was running a walk on behalf of the Canals and River Trust, so nearly twenty of us set off. The usual suspects by the bridge were enhanced by the escaped Black Swan and several Herons. A Grey Wagtail was heard calling as we moved off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reversing our normal route we started off along the North Bank. Two Egyptian Geese were on the pontoon by the sailing club but the first real highlight was a pair of Stonechats along the fence posts at the back of the football pitch. A Little Egret in flight added to the interest and this was followed by a Kestrel being mobbed by a Crow. There were usual tit flocks from time to time, one of which contained a Coal Tit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Crossing the old tip to reach the path to the watch point a Jay flew over. The watch point provided plenty of Teal, Shoveler and Gadwall as usual but, less normal, at least one Wigeon and a couple of rather dozy female type Pintail (Believed to be a male in eclipse plumage & a female). The first of two distant Red Kites was seen from here and some of the group were lucky enough to get a brief view of a Kingfisher. There was also a brief view of a Blackcap, rather late in the year now for these. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The walk down to the hide produced a nice flock of at least 35 Pochard. At the hide itself things were fairly quiet but we did have a few Snipe and Cetti’s Warblers were heard on several occasions. Great Crested Grebes were still feeding very vocal young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Species seen<\/strong>:Canada Goose, Mute Swan, Egyptian Goose, Shoveler, Gadwall, Wigeon, Mallard, Pintail, Teal, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Cormorant, Red Kite, Moorhen, Coot, Snipe, Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Herring Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Feral Pigeon, Woodpigeon, Kingfisher, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Kestrel, Ring-necked Parakeet, Jay, Magpie, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Cetti’s Warbler, Long-tailed Tit, Blackcap, Wren, Starling, Robin, Stonechat, Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, Chaffinch (Black Swan).
