Black-winged Stilts breed in Kent

Four chicks fledged this summer at RSPB Worth Marshes near Sandwich after a pair of birds arrived from Africa. This is the first breeding record for the species on the reserve and brings hope for more returning in the future. It is believed stilts are flying further north as extreme weather conditions cause natural habitat in countries like Spain to become too hot.

RSPB Worth Marshes has been restored into a wildlife-rich landscape thanks to funding from the Water Environment Grant, completed in autumn 2022. The reserve’s design was to provide a wetland habitat for wading birds, including species that may begin to newly colonise!
