Local wild places

The North Bucks Local Group regularly visit a wide variety of locations, some local to Milton Keynes and others further afield. For a large urban area, Milton Keynes is surprising good for birding, with several flood-containing lakes and some very good nature reserves. Within an hour’s drive there are a large number of country parks, nature reserves, reservoirs and other sites well worth visiting.

Click on each location for full details, how to find it using the accompanying Google map, links to their own websites if there is one, and for photographs.

We hope to add more sites over time to the current modest list.

The main lake at Linford Lakes Nature Reserve

Linford Lakes Nature Reserve

Linford Lakes NR is a very quiet, peaceful and photogenic place with a large lake, many small ponds, mature wet woodland and several hides. There’s always plenty to see here at any time of the year – birds, plants, insects, fungi, mosses and lichens.

Nuthatch ar Rushmere Country Park

Rushmere Country Park

Rushemere CP is a popular place for families and walkers. There is a small lake, mature woodlands, 2 cafes, one of which shows video camera views of nesting Grey Herons in the Spring. Always carry some seed to put on fence posts and watch the waiting Tits, Finches and if you’re lucky a Nuthatch, tuck in.

Willen Lake, Milton Keynes

Willen Lakes

Located on the edge of urban Milton Keynes, there is always a good selection of birds to be seen.
