About Macclesfield Wildlife Explorers

The objectives of the Macclesfield Wildlife Explorers group are to help educate children about birds, wildlife in general, the countryside, and the issues that affect the habitats that wildlife need to survive. We do this through an active programme of indoor and outdoor meetings, and hold approximately seven indoor and eight outdoor meetings each year (September-July).

The group consists of both RSPB Wildlife Explorers, for children from 4 to 19 and RSPB Phoenix, for teenagers.

All meetings are:

  • open to all RSPB Wildlife Explorers members
  • open to the general public (small charge for Indoor Meetings)
  • led by trained volunteer Leaders
  • attended by a qualified First Aider
  • risk assessed

We make the learning experience ‘fun’ through the use of craft activities, games and quizes,
and take groups of children into the countryside to enjoy looking at, and learning about nature.

We encourage children to help nature and the environment by joining in with supervised activities such as:

  • tree planting
  • replanting a hedgerow at a local farm
  • digging ponds
  • making and siting bird nest boxes and bat boxes
  • making bird feeders and bird tables for garden birds
  • publicising the need for wildlife conservation
  • undertaking surveys of local wildlife
