{"id":5570,"date":"2026-07-01T12:00:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T11:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/?p=5570"},"modified":"2026-07-09T15:38:54","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T14:38:54","slug":"bovey-heathfield-2026-07-01","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/news-blogs\/blog\/bovey-heathfield-2026-07-01\/","title":{"rendered":"Bovey Heathfield, 1st July 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">16 members of the group plus the two leaders Jacqui and Claire met at 9pm at the entrance to Bovey Heathfield reserve.&nbsp; Some of our number who came from Exeter had to cope with an unexpected main road closure enroute but managed to find a way to the venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was still quite light as we slowly made our way up the lane and along the main path of the reserve, the moon having been full on the previous night was not due to appear until around 10.30pm.\u00a0 We heard a <strong>Yellowhammer<\/strong> calling and managed to see it, then stood for a while watching a family of <strong>Pied Wagtails<\/strong> acrobatically jumping around the heather, catching flying insects. We were also fortunate to see a <strong>Wheatear<\/strong> sitting on a bush in front of this performance.\u00a0 <strong>Stonechats<\/strong> and <strong>Skylarks<\/strong> were heard as we walked along and we had fly-bys from <strong>Herring Gulls<\/strong>, <strong>Swallows<\/strong> and <strong>Crows<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It gradually became darker and cloudier around 10pm when we reached the vantage point at the top of the reserve.\u00a0 We quickly saw our first <strong>Nightjar<\/strong> which suddenly took flight from the nearby undergrowth, having probably been disturbed by our presence.\u00a0 We had to wait about 20 minutes longer before we could clearly hear the churring and odd contact calls being made before other Nightjars started to forage for moths in flight, with some flying almost directly over the group.\u00a0 It is always a slightly mysterious and thrilling experience to see these birds flying silently overhead in the gloom and the sight was appreciated by the group.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we made our way back along the main path, we were fortunate enough to see 4 female glow worms glowing in the bushes waiting to be discovered by the flying males of the species.\u00a0 To say they helped to light our way back would be an exaggeration, but they were a welcome sight!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Claire Savaryn<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2026\/07\/Glow-worm-Bovey-Heathfield-Abbie.jpeg\" alt=\"Glow worm - Bovey Heathfield.\" class=\"wp-image-5572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2026\/07\/Glow-worm-Bovey-Heathfield-Abbie.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2026\/07\/Glow-worm-Bovey-Heathfield-Abbie-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2026\/07\/Glow-worm-Bovey-Heathfield-Abbie-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2026\/07\/Glow-worm-Bovey-Heathfield-Abbie-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Glow worm at Bovey Heathfield.
