{"id":5403,"date":"2026-03-21T20:00:19","date_gmt":"2026-03-21T20:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/?p=5403"},"modified":"2026-04-15T20:31:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T19:31:54","slug":"bowling_green_marsh_2026-03-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/news-blogs\/blog\/bowling_green_marsh_2026-03-21\/","title":{"rendered":"Bowling Green Marsh, 21st March 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spring equinox treated us to a beautiful sunny morning as 21 of us gathered to explore what birdlife we might encounter in Topsham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heading from the car park and up Monmouth Street amongst other regular garden birds, we saw a couple of <strong>Long-tailed Tit<\/strong> and a <strong>Great Spotted Woodpecker<\/strong>, then turning into Bowling Green Road we had good views of a female <strong>Blackcap<\/strong> and a <strong>Wren<\/strong>.\u00a0 Moving on to the viewing area over the <a href=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/local-wild-places\/bowling-green-marsh-and-goosemoor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Goosemoor<\/a> reedbeds there was less activity with just <strong>Little Egret<\/strong>, <strong>Wigeon<\/strong> and <strong>Mallard<\/strong> being present. So, onward we continued down the Bowling Green Road where we saw a male <strong>Blackcap<\/strong> and also a <strong>Snipe<\/strong> and <strong>Song Thrush<\/strong> as we looked across the marsh before going into Bowling Green hide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the hide, looking over <a href=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/exeter\/local-wild-places\/bowling-green-marsh-and-goosemoor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bowling Green Marsh<\/a> there was a fair variety of ducks and waders: <strong>Dunlin<\/strong>, <strong>Redshank<\/strong>, <strong>Black-tailed Godwit<\/strong>, <strong>Wigeon<\/strong>, <strong>Teal<\/strong>, <strong>Tufted Duck<\/strong> and also <strong>Black and Mute Swan<\/strong> as well as <strong>Canada Geese<\/strong>, <strong>Cormorants<\/strong> and some <strong>Shelduck<\/strong>. In the distant reedbeds a few <strong>Reed Bunting<\/strong> were spotted. A <strong>Grey Heron<\/strong> fishing and a <strong>Little Egret<\/strong> with its breeding feather plumes looked particularly eyecatching in the sunlight as did the <strong>Teal<\/strong> and <strong>Wigeon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving on down the lane we heard a <strong>Green Woodpecker<\/strong> with its distinctive yaffle call before arriving at the Goat Walk with the chance to look over the estuary with the tide now going out and the mudflats becoming available for <strong>Redshanks<\/strong> on our side and <strong>Curlew<\/strong> and other waders on the far shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We ended at the Quay where, looking up river, the final bonus was to see a <strong>Sparrowhawk<\/strong> in the distance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A very pleasant and relaxing morning with a good opportunity to chat to each other and good variety and number of birds to see. Once again it was a real pleasure to welcome a number of first-time visitors on our walk and my thanks goes to our regular and experienced members for helping newcomers to identify the birds we encountered and for allowing them to view some of the more distant birds through their scopes.
