Lesvos is at the centre of the East Mediterranean flyway and the peak period for summer visitors passing through falls between mid-April and early May. Steve Dudley\u2019s \u201cA Birdwatching Guide to Lesvos\u201d is probably the most up-to-date birdwatching guide to the island. There is no public transport on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neil started his talk in the Kalloni area where there are a lot of good sites. By the river there are likely to be egrets, black-winged stilts and stone curlews with yellow wagtails, hoopoes, bee-eaters, crested larks and red-backed shrikes nearby. The most important site for many waders is the Kalloni Saltpans. This is a private working site but there is a moat round the outside from which the saltpans can be viewed. Common, little and sandwich terns occur here along with greater flamingos and black-winged stilts. Ruff, curlew sandpipers and little stint pass through in summer plumage. It is also a great site for biting insects! Just outside the Saltpan is a wetland area, full or dry depending on the winter rain, where white-winged and whiskered terns may be seen. Glossy ibis, squacco heron, swallow-tail butterfly and dusky emerald dragonfly also occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving south, the Achladeri Forest is home to the short-toed treecreeper and Kruper\u2019s nuthatch, the latter one of the \u201cbig five\u201d species that birders are keen to see. The masked shrike is also quite common here. The Potamia Valley is a good area for the little crake, great reed warbler and Cetti\u2019s warbler. Persian squirrels are quite common here and the western rock nuthatch also occurs. The valley, with typical scrubby vegetation and olive trees, some hundreds of years old, is home to the Balkan green lizard which grows to one foot or more and is prey for a number of raptors. The sombre tit and olive-tree warbler which occur here are two more of the \u201cbig five\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tsiknias River is a good area to find wood sandpiper, Temminck\u2019s stint and black stork. Penduline tits nest here along with Cetti\u2019s warbler and olivaceous warbler. Non poisonous sand boas are also taken by raptors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further afield is the Kalloni Raptor Watch Point. Short-toed eagles, which prey on lizards and snakes, common and long-legged buzzards move through. Woodchat shrikes and Cretzschmar\u2019s bunting breed. South of Molyvos is an area where Sardinian warbler and the very rare Ruppell\u2019s warbler occur. The scrubby hillside is home to western Bonelli\u2019s warbler, the eastern race of the subalpine warbler, middle-spotted woodpecker (the only species of woodpecker on the island), griffon vulture, Eleonora\u2019s falcon, red-footed falcon and cirl bunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a number of good sites on the western side of the island. To the west of Makara the landscape is more open and rocky with fewer trees and this is where Alpine swifts and stonechats occur and little owls are widespread, nesting in the dry stone walls. The road to the Ipsilou Monastery is good for migrants such as golden oriole and cuckoo. Unless the winter has been very dry, it is also excellent for wild flowers and butterflies such as the small<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">copper. Ravens occur here and also the cinereous bunting another of the \u201cbig five\u201d. The area around the Petrified Forest (an important geological site) is good for the chukar (partridge).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roads round Sigri and Eressos are not for nervous drivers but this area is good for the great spotted cuckoo and higher up there is a population of true rock doves. Little bitterns, which are not shy, can be found in small lakes along with tree frogs, Levant marsh frogs and the stripe-necked terrapin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We thank Neil for a very enjoyable and informative tour of Lesvos during spring migration.
