A visitor here at any season needs to be ready for rapid changes in the weather which can be very dangerous if one is not properly prepared. The wildlife has to be adapted to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In summer plumage the female ptarmigan has some golden feathers brightening her otherwise subdued brown plumage and the vermiculated dark grey male has conspicuous red wattles above his eyes. In spring he calls from a high spot to attract a mate. As winter approaches they moult into a white plumage. Feathers over their legs and feet keep them warm and the foot feathers act as snow shoes. They share the mountains with the native white hare which has huge back feet which also act like snow shoes. Now-a-days there is less snow and the hares are not acquiring their brown summer coats as quickly as the landscape is changing, making them more at risk of predation by golden eagles and the like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The native Scots pine is a very important tree for wildlife. Down in the understorey where bilberries and other shrubs grow, one may be lucky enough to see a magnificent male capercaillie but they are undergoing a massive decline and there is a real possibility that they may become extinct in Scotland again. The adults eat gravel to help digest the plant material which they feed on. The young need animal protein. Up above are Scottish crossbills and both coal tits and crested tits. The coal tit, usually at the bottom of the pecking order, can see off a crested tit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outer layer of a red squirrel\u2019s winter coat gives protection from rain while the very thick under layer keeps it warm. The squirrel can also wrap its thick tail round its body for extra warmth and several may huddle together. In summer the coat is much thinner. They are predated by pine martens but the squirrels are more agile and can escape up into smaller branches. It is the squirrelpox virus carried by the introduced grey squirrel which has decimated our red squirrel population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ancient Caledonian Forest is a remnant of Temperate Rainforest. Its fast-flowing rivers provide ideal habitat for dippers and some of the secluded lochs and lochans have nesting Slavonian grebes. The male is superb in his breeding plumage and a pair perform an elaborate courtship dance. Red-throated diver, common sandpiper and grey wagtail also breed here with wood warblers nesting close to the ground in the woods. Scotch argus and dark green fritillary are amongst the butterflies here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ospreys became extinct in 1919 but re-established themselves and are doing very well. Oily feathers enable them to dive for fish and reversible claws allow them to hold on to their slippery prey. Mary said that unfortunately, with the increase in population, the local fish farmers are now less favourably disposed towards them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The red deer is the largest UK mammal but those in the Highlands are smaller than those elsewhere. Life on the mountains is tough. The rut takes place in October but at other times the males live peacefully together. Females stay with their calf for a year but otherwise tend to be solitary. The less common roe deer ruts in August. Highland cattle also live here. Their very thick winter coats protect them from the cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We thank Mary for an interesting talk and stunning photos of the beautiful scenery and wildlife of this area.
