Since then he has become a World Birder, author of bird books, Hampshire’s County Bird Recorder, Chairman of the Hampshire Ornithological Society as well as working on the Red Kite Recovery Programme.

Keith told us that red kites are very striking and agile birds: their five ‘fingers’ on each wing are splayed out, enabling them to change direction and steal food from other raptors, even white tailed eagles and goshawks. They like to follow tractors looking for squashed mammals and birds; their hooked beaks can take morsels of meat from already dead creatures, and they can grab food from the ground and above water, as well as clear dead animals from the roads.

The red kite’s wing span is 1.5 metres, they weigh between 1 and 1.5 kilograms, and can breed at two years of age. In March and April they take over nests from other raptors such as sparrowhawk, and like to line them with sheep’s wool as well as pieces of rubbish and random things such as a pair of tights taken from a washing line! 1 to 3 eggs are usually laid and incubated for 31 to 35 days. The female is larger than the male, and is on the nest; the male acts like a body guard bringing food to the female. Red kites roost together and help with feeding the young, and have been recorded as living for up to 25 years.

The red kite was once England’s commonest bird of prey but it was vulnerable to human persecution. The numbers started to decline in the1800s as they were seen as scavengers and shot or poisoned; by 1932 they were extinct in England and Scotland, with just a couple of pairs left in Wales. In the eighties, the red kite was one of only three native UK species to be globally threatened thus making it a priority species for the RSPB. In 1986 the RSPB and the Nature Conservancy Council (now Natural England and Scottish Natural Heritage) began to discuss the possibility of reintroducing the species back into England and Scotland. The guidelines on translocation had to be met, which meant that the human-created factors leading towards extinction had been addressed, and the birds chosen to be introduced were as genetically as similar as possible to the former indigenous population. The proposal met the criteria and the first birds were released in 1989 in northern Scotland and in the Chilterns in Buckinghamshire. It was known that red kites like to line their nests with wool and there are a lot of sheep in the Chilterns. Initial birds came from Malmo in Sweden and were flown over to Scotland and England by the RAF, a very momentous event as it was the first time an RAF plane had landed in Sweden since World War 2. A bit later, birds were imported from Navarra, Spain and Germany. This followed with reintroduction in Northampton, Yorkshire, Cumbria, NE Derwent, N. Scotland, the Black Isles, Ireland, Wicklow, Dublin and Wales, to reduce the interbreeding. The numbers started to increase and English birds were successfully used to establish populations in other parts of the country.

Between 1998 and 2010 Keith was involved in a project with the red kites in his home county of Hampshire. This involved keeping track of the young red kites by attaching transmitters to them that were useful for up to thirty miles. To attach the tags the volunteers had to climb the trees where the red kites were nesting. A wing tag was also fixed, one to each wing. The left one identified the bird’s origins and the right one the year it was tagged. Keith explained that the juvenile red kites were generally very obliging and thankfully remained very calm during the procedure. This project was seen to be very successful as it gave valuable information over the years of the red kites’ locations and breeding habits. Red kites do appear to roost together helping each other with feeding. The project also identified the amazing increase in red kites in Hampshire. Unfortunately there are very few red kites in Devon but they are often seen passing through, with one being seen a couple of days before Keith’s talk, and several others since. Keith said that he was surprised that they hadn’t arrived in Devon in higher numbers.

Red kites were once extinct in England and scarce in the rest of the United Kingdom but thanks to the long running Red Kite Reintroduction Programme and all the people who have given their time, they have started to thrive in many parts of the United Kingdom. They have enjoyed the goodwill of many but there will always be some that dislike the red kite because it is a scavenger resulting in some being intentionally shot and others illegally poisoned (as in the 1800s). Power cables are also a threat to them but this problem is regularly addressed.

At the end of the talk a member asked if they can be legally shot. Keith advised that red kites can be legally shot but there must be a good reason. For example, they were roosting on an airstrip at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, where they could have caused an accident. Another member asked if red kites take lapwing chicks. Keith advised that red kites eat mainly dead animals (carrion). If their supply of carrion runs out, they will feed on lapwing chicks if they can, but the parents are good at protecting their chicks and during the day can drive away red kites and buzzards.

On behalf of the RSPB Exeter and District Local Group I would like to thank Keith for his inspirational and very informative talk, outlining the reintroduction of this spectacular bird from near extinction, and the part he played in their remarkable resurgence.

Post script: the 2020 Red List update on March 5th 2021 showed that many raptors are still in peril but the positive news was that the red kite was down listed to ‘Least Concern’, thanks in part to the successful reintroduction programme.

Cilla Ingram

Red kite, Norman Norris (rspb-images.com)

Keith explained to us that his interest in birds started when he was a teenager on family holidays at Hopes Nose in Devon.
