I arrived at the Exmouth marina in plenty of time, thinking we would be near the front of the queue for the boat – but it turned out many others had had the same idea and beat us to it. Still, there was plenty of room on the boat, both on the top deck and the warmer inside cabin.

Our guide for the day was Dave Smallshire, who kept up a very informative commentary for almost the full length of the cruise. We started off by going east along the Exmouth seafront, before turning around and heading back into the mouth of the estuary. At the start of the cruise, the main birds to be seen were Brent geese, various gulls and some curlews and oystercatchers on the mud. As we passed around the back side of Dawlish Warren, we had good views of some shags – some perched on buoys and others on the edge of a sandbank.

With the windy conditions, there weren’t quite so many birds as usual on the lower section of the estuary, but we had good views of small groups of red-breasted mergansers, three goldeneyes and several great crested grebes, with a fly-by of a flock of about 100 bar-tailed godwits. Perhaps the star birds were two black-necked grebes which are spending the winter near Starcross. As we passed the Starcross Yacht Club, we could see a few grey herons starting to nest in the trees behind.

Moving on we started to encounter more birds – a nice group of pintails, and then a flock of black-tailed godwit, with many dunlins scattered across the mud. As we passed Turf Lock we started to encounter good numbers of avocets, mixed up with black tailed godwits. Nearing Topsham, Dave told us to look out for the spotted redshank that has been spending a lot of time near Hannifords Quay – and there it was, along with even more black-tailed godwits.

Shortly after that, we turned round and headed back towards Exmouth. Highlights of the return journey were a turnstone (I only saw one, but there may have been more), and a small flock of grey plovers and knots. A few of us caught sight of a peregrine that flew fast and low past the boat. Then, all too soon, it was time to disembark, after an enjoyable and productive trip.

Richard Swinbank

44 species recorded: Brent Goose; Canada Goose; Snow Goose; Mute Swan; Shelduck; Wigeon; Pintail; Teal; Goldeneye; Red-breasted Merganser; Feral Pigeon; Great Crested Grebe; Black-necked Grebe; Oystercatcher; Avocet; Lapwing; Golden Plover; Grey Plover; Ringed Plover; Curlew; Bar-tailed Godwit; Black-tailed Godwit; Turnstone; Knot; Sanderling; Dunlin; Redshank; Spotted Redshank; Greenshank; Black-headed Gull; Common Gull; Great Black-backed Gull; Herring Gull; Lesser Black-backed Gull; Cormorant; Shag; Grey Heron; Little Egret; Marsh Harrier; Peregrine; Kestrel; Jackdaw; Carrion Crow; Pied Wagtail

Thirty of us joined the Stuart Line birdwatching cruise, on a day with decent weather – sunny spells and not too cold, although there was quite a strong breeze.
