This little reserve helps protect Exeter from flooding by holding excess water several times a year after heavy rain or snow. The changes in water levels mean it’s good for birds. Wading birds drop in to feed on the muddy edges, and many ducks visit when the water levels are high.

Matford Marsh is popular with cyclists, walkers and joggers who use the adjacent cycle path and enjoy the wildlife – such as Green Sandpiper, Reed Bunting, Snipe & Water Rail – in this special place.

On Bridge Road (A379) between Countess Wear Roundabout and the Exminster/Newton Abbot turnoffs, prior to the Devon Hotel, Matford. (SX936890). No parking close by (nearest is the small car park for Riverside Valley Park, at the western end of Countess Wear bridge).
