Join us at one of our events

You don’t need to be a member of the RSPB (or the local group) to enjoy our events, but we’d love you to join.

We hold illustrated talks on wildlife between September and April, with refreshments in the interval included in the admission price. The venue for our meetings is St Thomas Church Hall, Church Rd, St Thomas, Exeter, EX2 9BQ. Free parking is available in the church car park and nearby streets.

Complementing the indoor meetings, we also run a series of virtual (Zoom) talks which have proved popular. These Zoom talks enable us to invite speakers who live too far away to travel to Exeter, as well as catering for members who can’t easily get to Exeter for an evening meeting.

We run regular guided walks and other trips throughout the year. Birdwatching experience is not necessary. There is no need to book (unless explicitly stated) – just turn up. We normally make a small charge for non-members, but, if you’ve never been on one of our walks before, the first one is free. For outdoor events, please bring binoculars if you have them and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Assistance dogs only.

Our upcoming events

We have a busy programme of events that include talks, walks to local sites and the occasional trip to sites further away.

Our next two events are featured here.

Non-members are more than welcome to join us.

Join our group

We’d love to have you as a member!

The annual membership fee of the Exeter & District local group is only £8 for a single person, or £10 for joint membership (a couple or family at the same address). Each membership subscription covers one calendar year; if you join in the autumn, your membership runs to the end of the following year.

As a group member, you will receive copies of our quarterly newsletter, and you will be sent invitations to our Zoom talks and occasional news updates via email. You will also benefit from reduced admission prices for our meetings. We hope you will also develop friendships with other local group members with a common interest in wildlife and conservation.

To increase your support to the RSPB, please consider entering our 100 Club lottery too. The 100 Club is a monthly draw to raise money for the RSPB and provide cash prizes to its subscribers.

See our membership application form for details how to join the group.

Getting more involved - can you help?

As you can see from this website, the Exeter local group currently runs a full programme of activities including talks by invited experts, birdwatching walks and occasional fundraising events. We depend on volunteers to organise these activities, and we are looking for new people to help us run the group and support the work of the RSPB. There are several ways in which you might be able to help us.

We need volunteer(s) who can store the audio-visual equipment that we use at the indoor meetings and transport it to and from the meetings. We also need volunteer(s) to set up the sound system for the meetings. Having volunteers to store and operate the equipment is crucial to being able to continue with our talks programme.

Other volunteering opportunities include: helping at our indoor meetings; writing a report on our talks for the newsletter and website; helping to lead, or write up, our birdwatching walks.

You’re welcome get in touch with us via our Contact Page to express an interest, or just learn more about what is involved in each role.
