Outing to Kinnordy, Lintrathen and Backwater

The day started promisingly with the sun shining and a lovely chorus of birdsong in my garden. I’d decided to go directly to Loch Kinnordy and meet the others there. On arrival it still seemed relatively mild and sunny and we headed down to the hide. The birds were singing here too – we heard goldcrest, great tit, wren, chaffinch and blue tit on the way. A scan of the loch revealed quite a large number of whooper swans, also tufted duck, goldeneye, mallard, wigeon and teal.

There was a nice number of lapwing on the islands too. Far off over the hills red kite, buzzard and raven were spotted. A walk down to the next hide produced quite a few more small birds including siskin, tree sparrow, dunnock and robin with coal tits on the feeders. Once we got to the second hide I realised I should have worn my gloves and hat…..I was starting to feel rather chilly and my fingers were going numb! From here though, we added little grebe and goosander to our list.

On to Backwater where it was even colder and the sun disappeared! It seemed oddly quiet on the bird front too. We drove along to the end to look for raptors but despite spending quite a while scanning through ‘scopes the only ones we saw were more red kites and a buzzard.

We decided to go back to the main car park for lunch and then walked along the other side of the reservoir. It was still very quiet. We heard redpoll calling but they were very difficult to find and I never saw one although others did. A kestrel perched on a dead tree and song and mistle thrushes occasionally appeared but not much else (although someone saw a stonechat which I also missed!).

Finally, to Lintrathen. We went to both hides but, as at Backwater, there was very little about – more wigeon, tufted ducks and goldeneye along with some mute swans. At this point our numbers had dwindled considerably and I decided to head home myself. Although there were no great excitements it had been a very enjoyable day out.
