Field Trip report Ardingly Reservoir Saturday 16th March 2024

Nine of members of the group turned out on a cool but sunny morning.  After a lot of rain the paths were very muddy.  It was good to be met by a local RSPB member.

Birds seen or heard (H) until 12 o’clock when some of us had to leave:

Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Cormorant, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Buzzard, Woodpigeon, Great-spotted Woodpecker (H), Robin, Wren, Blackbird, Redwing, Chiffchaff, Long-tailed Tit, Marsh Tit (H), Blue Tit, Great Tit, Magpie, Crow, Goldfinch.

The sighting of the day was the Little Grebe, seen on a pond  a little way from the reservoir.

One thing from the outing was especially memorable:

“Mud, mud, glorious mud, Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood, So follow me, follow, Down to the hollow, And there let us wallow in glorious mud”

Our next outing is to RSPB Pulborough Brooks Reserve on Wednesday 17th April. Please contact us if you would like to join us and want more details. You can email
