Field Trip:- Costal Walk to Portstewart

Five members turned out on Tuesday morning 27th February in Portstewart for our costal field trip.  It was mostly sunny with a brisk north westerly wind.  We had a nice selection of waders and a few gulls.  It was very pleasant and quite dramatic with the sun hitting the rolling waves and the spray flying at they hit the shoreline.  A flock of Golden Plover took to the air weaving in a murmuration, at times just above the waves and then high against an azure sky.  Oystercatchers loudly whistled and piped, Redshank  bobbed up and down in agitation.  A mixture of Purple Sandpiper and Dunlin rested on a rocky outcrop heads under wings in quiet repose.  A male Eider Duck in black and white splendour rode the surf disappearing at times as he dived for shellfish.  It was a most enjoyable morning our full  list was:- Redshank, Purple Sandpiper, Turnstone, Dunlin, Golden Plover, Oystercatcher, Great Black Backed Gull, Herring Gull, Hooded Crow,  Jackdaw, Eider Duck, Rock Pipit, Red Throated Diver and Shag.
