Ambersham & Heyshott, 16th May

Seven of us had a somewhat truncated walk as the weather became significantly worse than forecast, but we had a couple of nice birds first. Near the Ambersham Common car park a singing Tree Pipit entertained us with its song flights, a male Stonechat posed nicely and a couple of people had glimpses of Dartford Warblers. Walking over Heyshott Common the birds were fairly quiet but we had some flyover Crossbills, and more Stonechats, Tree Pipits and some Linnets. The weather defeated our efforts to cover Ambersham in more detail so we called this walk a day. A few people hadn’t visited this site before so at least they got a taste of what a nice area for exploring it is. Five of us then went up to Bignor Hill nearby to watch the Dotterel that had been reported, and we had excellent views of this lovely bird. It almost made us forget the heavy rain!
