The site of a former chapel, demolished after Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monastries, St Anne’s Wood is a busy habitat encompassing the northern end of Brislington Brook, which leads walkers through the woods from Nightingale Valley to the south. Look around for plentiful wildflowers in spring and fungi in the autumn, with a wide variety of invertebrates and woodland birds to be found all year round. Keep them peeled for the occasional little egret straying from the River Avon, as well as St Anne’s Holy Well, which served the chapel. There are pathways leading through the woods, with some areas containing steps on gentle inclines, as well as patches of rough, uneven ground.
