The habitats covered today during our 3-mile walk included the River Don, a mixture of broadleaf and pine woodland and some mixed farmland in the hope of seeing a good variety of species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We started our day at the Fetternear Woods car park, and it was no surprise to see the River Don flowing faster than usual. Overhead a few skeins of <strong>Pink-footed Geese<\/strong> passed noisily through and although the birding was initially slow to start due to challenging conditions, we were still able to spot a few species such as <strong>Jackdaw<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Coal Tit<\/strong>, <strong>Blue Tit<\/strong>, <strong>Robin<\/strong> and <strong>Chaffinch<\/strong>. Unfortunately, we couldn&#8217;t find any Dippers today, which are usually found in the area. However, we did spot a female <strong>Goosander<\/strong> in the midstream of the Don, which seemed to be quite at home in the fast-running current.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/c7da63fa-4c4c-424e-b4ad-9dadefbc7d62.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2631\" style=\"width:602px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/c7da63fa-4c4c-424e-b4ad-9dadefbc7d62.jpg 768w, https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/c7da63fa-4c4c-424e-b4ad-9dadefbc7d62-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Beech Tree avenue (c\/o Keith Yates)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things suddenly improved just as we were about to move a little further away from the river when a <strong>Kingfisher<\/strong> took flight from a nearby burn and flashed noisily past right in front of the group before taking a sharp left along the river. A <strong>Treecreeper<\/strong> was also noted here and the unmistakable silhouette of a <strong>Buzzard<\/strong> could be seen perched in nearby trees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is fair to say that the Kingfisher was a catalyst for the birding to improve and as we crossed the metal bridge over the burn and walked along a beautiful beech tree avenue a few more species began to appear. A few <strong>Blackbirds<\/strong> were searching the leaf litter and then suddenly as were neared two of the few houses on the estate a <strong>Brambling<\/strong> appeared on a nearby fence. As we paused a second <strong>Brambling<\/strong> appeared along with a few <strong>Chaffinch<\/strong> and <strong>Coal Tits<\/strong>. Just opposite the houses is a small copse and here a <strong>Red Squirrel<\/strong> was noted before Rob somewhat sheepishly reported a <strong>Hawfinch<\/strong>! I say sheepishly as he was probably in disbelief as there were actually four high in the canopy. A somewhat frantic five minutes ensued as we tried to get all members onto the birds and indeed succeeded before they flew out past the houses. (c\/o Keith Yates)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking on we stopped briefly for a look around the now derelict Fetternear Home Farm Stables and shortly after came across an oasis of birds in a small section of gnarled and broken woodland. Here <strong>Redwings<\/strong> and <strong>Blackbirds<\/strong> were searching the ground and species noted included more <strong>Brambling<\/strong>, <strong>Chaffinch<\/strong>, <strong>Treecreeper<\/strong>, <strong>Blue Tit<\/strong>, <strong>Coal Tit<\/strong>, <strong>Great Spotted Woodpecker<\/strong> and <strong>Bullfinch<\/strong>, including a couple of stunning males.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/3ed89fec-2430-46d3-a1f5-10b3ccb05d9f.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/3ed89fec-2430-46d3-a1f5-10b3ccb05d9f.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/3ed89fec-2430-46d3-a1f5-10b3ccb05d9f-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/3ed89fec-2430-46d3-a1f5-10b3ccb05d9f-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bullfinch (c\/o Keith Yates)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From here we took a shortcut through Fountain Wood before emerging to cross farmland and onto the Netherton Business Centre car park. As we crossed the open space of the farmland a large movement of <strong>Woodpigeon<\/strong> was noted, along with a single <strong>Pheasant <\/strong>as the wind continued to gust. Pausing at the car park a large contingent of <strong>Pink-footed Geese<\/strong> were feeding but too distant and in direct sunlight to scan. A couple of <strong>Curlews<\/strong> were also seen, their heads occasionally popping up above the stubble.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pause at Fetternear House, the old site of the Bishop&#8217;s Palace before backtracking to our starting point at Fetternear Woods car park produced some additional species for the day list. These included <strong>Goldcrest<\/strong>,&nbsp; <strong>Mistle Thrush<\/strong>, <strong>Jay<\/strong>, <strong>Long-tailed Tits<\/strong>, <strong>Siskin<\/strong>, <strong>Wren<\/strong>, <strong>Starling<\/strong> and <strong>Goldfinch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today&#8217;s mantra has to be quality over quantity in what could be described as challenging conditions but a thoroughly enjoyable one for all and we ended this year&#8217;s outings with another <strong>Red Squirrel <\/strong>in the car park grounds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/4922523b-1cd3-4ed3-84f6-e0ed8fcb6084.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/4922523b-1cd3-4ed3-84f6-e0ed8fcb6084.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/4922523b-1cd3-4ed3-84f6-e0ed8fcb6084-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/group.rspb.org.uk\/aberdeen\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/4922523b-1cd3-4ed3-84f6-e0ed8fcb6084-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Greenland White-fronted Goose (c\/o Keith Yates)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After lunch, five hardy souls headed over to the nearby Dalmadilly Ponds where we were rewarded with a <strong>Greenland White-fronted Goose<\/strong>, which I believe could be the same bird returning to winter with us for its third consecutive year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to Keith for leading the outing, and for the photos.
